The bill, S.B. No. 2825, amends Section 28.002(c-3) of the Education Code to update the essential knowledge and skills required for the technology applications curriculum for public school students in kindergarten through grade eight. The State Board of Education is mandated to include Internet safety and keyboard use in the curriculum. However, the bill specifies that the Board may not adopt skills related to coding, computer programming, computational thinking, or cybersecurity for students in grades K-5, nor can it require the use of electronic devices, digital instruction, or the Internet, except as necessary for the Internet safety and keyboard use curriculum.
Additionally, the bill requires the State Board of Education to review and revise the technology applications curriculum every five years to ensure its relevance to student education and alignment with current or emerging professions. The first review under the new provisions must be completed by December 31, 2026. The Act is set to take effect on September 1, 2025.
