The bill amends the Transportation Code regarding the expiration dates of certain driver's licenses in Texas. Specifically, it changes the expiration period for original driver's licenses issued to citizens, nationals, or legal permanent residents from the eighth anniversary of the application date to the tenth anniversary. Similarly, for non-citizens, the expiration period is also extended from the sixth anniversary to the tenth anniversary of the application date. Additionally, the bill clarifies that the expiration of a renewed driver's license for both categories of applicants will also be based on the tenth anniversary of the previous expiration date, unless otherwise dictated by the applicant's lawful presence in the United States.

The changes will apply to driver's licenses issued on or after the effective date of the Act, which is set for September 1, 2025. Licenses issued before this date will continue to be governed by the previous law in effect at the time of application. This legislation aims to standardize and extend the validity of driver's licenses, thereby potentially reducing the frequency of renewals for eligible applicants.
