S.B. No. 2569 amends the reporting requirements for law enforcement agencies in Texas regarding their use or operation of unmanned aircraft. The bill specifies that, starting from January 1 and no later than January 15 of each odd-numbered year, state and local law enforcement agencies with populations over 150,000 that have used unmanned aircraft in the past 24 months must post a report on their publicly accessible Internet website. If an agency does not have a website, they are required to make the report available to the public through other means.
The bill removes the previous requirement for agencies to issue a written report to the governor, lieutenant governor, and members of the legislature, as well as the obligation to retain the report for public viewing. Instead, the focus is shifted to ensuring that the report is accessible online or through alternative public means, thereby enhancing transparency regarding the use of unmanned aircraft by law enforcement. The act will take effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote from both houses; otherwise, it will take effect on September 1, 2025.
