The bill amends the Natural Resources Code to update the guidelines for establishing veterans cemeteries in Texas. It specifies that the board, along with the chairman of the Texas Veterans Commission and two representatives from the veterans community, will determine the location and size of these cemeteries, as well as eligibility for burial. Notably, the previous limit of selecting "up to seven" locations has been removed, allowing for greater flexibility in the selection process.
Additionally, the bill modifies the funding provisions for veterans cemeteries. It allows the board to utilize funds from the veterans' land fund and the veterans' housing assistance funds for planning, designing, operating, maintaining, enlarging, or improving veterans cemeteries, without a specified annual cap. However, it explicitly prohibits the use of these funds for acquiring land for new cemeteries. The bill is set to take effect on September 1, 2025.
