The bill amends Section 601.072(a-1) of the Transportation Code to increase the minimum motor vehicle liability insurance coverage requirements for bodily injury or death and for property damage. Effective January 1, 2026, the new minimum coverage amounts will be $50,000 for bodily injury to or death of one person, $100,000 for bodily injury to or death of two or more persons, and $40,000 for damage to or destruction of property of others. These amounts replace the previous minimums of $30,000, $60,000, and $25,000, respectively.
The bill specifies that the updated insurance coverage requirements will apply only to policies that are delivered, issued for delivery, or renewed on or after January 1, 2026. Policies that are delivered, issued for delivery, or renewed before this date will continue to be governed by the existing law prior to the amendments. The act is set to take effect on September 1, 2025.
