The bill amends Section 621.4015(a) of the Transportation Code to expand the criteria under which a county commissioners court can designate a constable or deputy constable as a weight enforcement officer. The current law allows for this designation in counties with a population of 1.5 million or more that are within 200 miles of an international border or adjacent to a county with a population of 3.3 million or more. The proposed changes include the deletion of the previous criteria and the addition of new conditions: counties that have a planned community of 20,000 or more acres established under the National Urban Policy Act of 1970, and counties with a population of more than 75,000 but less than 90,000 that are adjacent to a county described in the second criterion.
This bill aims to enhance the enforcement of weight regulations in specific counties by broadening the scope of eligibility for weight enforcement officers. The changes are set to take effect on September 1, 2025.
