The bill, S.B. No. 1543, amends Section 33.202(c) of the Education Code to enhance safety training requirements for public school extracurricular activities. The updated safety training program will now include certification from recognized organizations such as the American Red Cross or the University Interscholastic League, as well as current training in emergency action planning, effective communication with emergency services, and the recognition of symptoms related to various potentially catastrophic injuries. Notably, the bill adds "rhabdomyolysis, cardiac arrest, and injuries requiring use of a defibrillator" to the list of conditions that must be recognized during training.
The new requirements will take effect starting with the 2025-2026 school year. The bill also stipulates that it will become effective immediately if it receives a two-thirds majority vote from both houses of the legislature; otherwise, it will take effect on September 1, 2025.
