S.B. No. 1418 amends the Texas Education Code to update the terminology used for certain assessment instruments administered to public school students. The bill removes references to the "SAT Subject Test" and "ACT-Plan," replacing them with the "PreACT." It specifies that satisfactory performance on various assessments, including the PSAT and PreACT, can be used to meet end-of-course assessment requirements. Additionally, the bill clarifies that the prohibition on administering certain assessments does not apply to college preparation assessments, including the PSAT, PreACT, SAT, and ACT.

Furthermore, the bill establishes criteria for an academic distinction designation for school districts and campuses based on student performance in achieving postsecondary readiness. This includes metrics such as the percentage of students who perform satisfactorily on required assessments, earn industry certifications, complete career and technical courses, and achieve college readiness benchmarks on the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and PreACT. The act will take effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote from both houses; otherwise, it will take effect on September 1, 2025.
