The resolution commemorates the 100th anniversary of Port Freeport, which will be celebrated in 2025. The port's history dates back to the early 1820s when Stephen F. Austin recognized the potential of the Brazos River for deep-water navigation. The establishment of the Brazos River Harbor Navigation District in December 1925 marked the official beginning of the port, which has since evolved into a significant hub for international trade, ranking among the top U.S. ports for foreign waterborne export tonnage and chemicals. The port has also made substantial contributions to the economy, generating an annual impact of $157.3 billion and supporting over 266,000 jobs nationwide.
In addition to its economic contributions, Port Freeport has demonstrated a commitment to sustainability and innovation, with ongoing infrastructure projects like the Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project, set for completion in 2025. This project aims to deepen the harbor channel, making it the deepest port in Texas. The resolution expresses the Texas Senate's best wishes for the continued success of Port Freeport and acknowledges its vital role in the economic vitality of Texas over the past century. An official copy of the resolution will be prepared for the port as a token of high regard from the Texas Senate.
