S.B. No. 1207 aims to enhance the parenting and paternity awareness program in Texas public schools by incorporating instruction on adoption. The bill amends Sections 28.002(p) and (p-2) of the Education Code to require that the program includes information related to adoption, specifically covering the differences between private adoption and foster care, the process for adopting a child, and adoption as an alternative to parenthood. Additionally, the program must address relationship skills and, in schools without a family violence prevention program, include skills for preventing family violence.
Furthermore, the bill allows school districts to develop or adopt research-based programs and curriculum materials that provide instruction on child development, parenting skills, and the newly included information regarding adoption. The act is set to take effect for the 2025-2026 school year and will be implemented immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote from both houses of the legislature; otherwise, it will take effect on September 1, 2025.
