Senate Bill No. 10 mandates that public elementary and secondary schools in Texas display a durable poster or framed copy of the Ten Commandments in each classroom. The bill specifies that the display must be in a conspicuous location and meet certain criteria, including being at least 16 inches wide and 20 inches tall, and legible from anywhere in the classroom. The text of the Ten Commandments is prescribed in detail, and schools that do not have such a display must accept privately donated copies that meet the same requirements. Additionally, schools may choose to purchase the posters using district funds if they do not receive donations.
The bill also clarifies that no public school is exempt from this requirement, and it will take effect starting with the 2025-2026 school year. The act will become effective immediately if it receives a two-thirds majority vote in both houses of the legislature; otherwise, it will take effect on September 1, 2025.
