Senate Bill No. 993 amends Article 18B.202(a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure to expand the authority for applying for an order to install and use a mobile tracking device. The bill specifies that a district judge may issue such an order upon the application of either an authorized peace officer or a peace officer commissioned by the comptroller. This addition allows for greater flexibility in law enforcement operations regarding the use of mobile tracking devices.

The bill is set to take effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote from all members elected to each house of the Texas Legislature. If it does not achieve this level of support, the bill will take effect on September 1, 2025.
