Senate Resolution No. 16 recognizes January 29, 2025, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Day at the State Capitol in Texas, honoring the contributions of the South Central Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. This sorority, founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and 19 other students, is the first Greek sorority for African American women. With a mission to promote high scholastic and ethical standards, unity among women, and service to all mankind, Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown to over 360,000 members across more than 1,000 chapters worldwide, making significant impacts in civil rights, education, economic empowerment, and healthcare.
The resolution highlights the sorority's ongoing commitment to advocacy and social change under the leadership of its 31st international president, Danette Anthony Reed. It acknowledges the organization's role in fostering personal and professional development among its members and its dedication to equality and equity for all. The Texas Senate extends a warm welcome to the visiting delegation from Alpha Kappa Alpha, celebrating their century-long legacy of service and leadership.
