This day is celebrated by members of the South Central Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which is the first Greek sorority for African American women, founded on January 15, 1908, by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and 19 other students at Howard University. The sorority aims to promote high scholastic and ethical standards, foster unity among women, and provide service to humanity, with over 360,000 members across more than 1,000 chapters worldwide.
The resolution highlights Alpha Kappa Alpha's significant contributions to civil rights, education, economic empowerment, and healthcare over its century-long history. Under the leadership of its 31st international president, Danette Anthony Reed, the sorority continues to focus on the personal and professional development of its members and the promotion of social change. The Texas House of Representatives extends a warm welcome to the visiting delegation of the sorority, acknowledging their ongoing efforts toward equality and equity for all.
