S.C.R. No. 5 is a Senate Concurrent Resolution that honors Robert Rives, a distinguished alumnus of the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) and a pioneering educator in the deaf and hard of hearing community. Rives made history as the first TSD graduate to attend Gallaudet University, graduating in 1893. He dedicated over 40 years to teaching at TSD and was the school's inaugural football coach, achieving a commendable record. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the TSD Alumni Association Hall of Fame in 1999 and continues to inspire young athletes at the school.

The resolution calls for the Texas School for the Deaf to name its middle school gymnasium the Robert Rives Gymnasium as a tribute to his legacy. The resolution was adopted by both the Senate and the House, reflecting unanimous support, and it directs the secretary of state to forward an official copy to the Governing Board of TSD.
