The resolution recognizes February 26, 2025, as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day, aiming to enhance public understanding of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a chronic cardiovascular disease characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle. HCM can lead to severe complications such as heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and, in rare cases, sudden cardiac death. It is the most common inheritable heart disease, affecting a significant number of individuals in Texas, with estimates ranging from 58,000 to nearly 147,000 cases, though approximately 85 percent remain undiagnosed. The resolution highlights the importance of awareness, as HCM shares symptoms with other cardiovascular conditions, complicating accurate diagnosis.

The resolution emphasizes the need for thorough screenings and diagnostic tests by healthcare providers to identify HCM, as well as the importance of patients being informed about their medical history and the disease's symptoms. Following a diagnosis, patients are encouraged to collaborate with healthcare professionals to explore management options, including medications and surgical treatments. By designating a specific day for awareness, the resolution aims to unite individuals globally in their commitment to improving the quality of life for those affected by HCM and urges all Texans to educate themselves about the disease. An official copy of the resolution will be provided to the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association as a gesture of respect from the Texas House of Representatives.
