The bill amends Section 25.0344 of the Education Code to expand the eligibility for student transfers in public schools for children of certain public servants. The new language specifies that the term "parent" now includes individuals standing in a parental relationship to a student, and it introduces additional categories of public servants eligible for transfers, including peace officers, prosecuting attorneys, servicemembers, and various judicial officers. The bill also clarifies that the transfer request must be made by the parent, and the transfer must be to the campus or school district selected by the parent.

Additionally, the bill states that school districts are not required to provide transportation for students who transfer under this provision. The changes will take effect starting with the 2025-2026 school year, and the bill will prevail over any conflicting legislation from the 89th Legislature. The act can take effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds majority vote in both houses; otherwise, it will take effect on September 1, 2025.
