H.B. No. 1300 amends the Health and Safety Code to enhance the collection and reporting of data regarding veteran deaths in Texas. The bill requires that when a death certificate is filed for a veteran, the department must submit deidentified information to the Texas Veterans Commission, including the cause of death, age, race, gender, and occupation of the deceased. This replaces the previous requirement for the state registrar to notify the Texas Veterans Commission.
Additionally, the bill mandates that by September 1 of each year, the Texas Veterans Commission must prepare and submit a written report to the legislature's standing committees on veterans affairs. This report will include aggregated data from the previous year, an evaluation of that data, and any recommendations for legislative or other actions. The initial report is due by September 1, 2026, and the act will take effect on September 1, 2025.
