H.R. No. 20 is a resolution commemorating the 150th anniversary of Ebenezer Third Baptist Church in Austin, which was founded on February 16, 1875. The church, originally known as Third Baptist Church, was established by Reverend C. Ward and 18 charter members, initially meeting in a private home before moving to its current location in 1885. Over the years, the church has expanded its facilities and has been recognized for its contributions to the community, including the historic achievement of its Bright and Early Choir, which became the first African American choir to perform on a commercial radio program in Texas in 1938. The church has also been honored with a Texas Historical Marker in 1976.
The resolution highlights the significant role Ebenezer Third Baptist Church has played in fostering spiritual growth, fellowship, and outreach within the community. It acknowledges the leadership of various pastors, particularly Reverend Dr. Marvin C. Griffin, who served for over four decades, and current pastor Reverend Dr. Ricky Freeman. The Texas House of Representatives expresses its best wishes for the future of the congregation and officially recognizes this milestone with the adoption of the resolution on March 6, 2025. An official copy of the resolution will be prepared for the church as a token of esteem from the Texas House.
