The resolution honors the life and legacy of Peter Winstead, a distinguished attorney and civic leader from Austin, who passed away on August 7, 2024, at the age of 84. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Dallas, Winstead had a notable educational background, earning degrees from Stanford University and The University of Texas School of Law. He began his legal career with the U.S. Department of Justice and later co-founded the law firm Winstead PC, which became well-known for its work with start-up companies, including guiding the initial public offering of Dell Computer Corporation. Winstead was also actively involved in various professional and community organizations, serving as chair of the tax sections for the Dallas Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas, and as the inaugural chair of the Texas Turnpike Authority.

In addition to his professional achievements, Winstead was a devoted family man, married for over 45 years and a father to five children, with a growing family that included ten grandchildren. His contributions to the community were recognized through numerous awards, including being named Austinite of the Year in 2004. The resolution expresses the Texas House of Representatives' condolences to Winstead's family and acknowledges the significant impact he made in both his professional and personal life, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration for those who knew him.
