HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
       WHEREAS, John C. Owens of Lubbock is receiving a |
|
Distinguished Alumni Award from the Texas Tech Alumni Association |
|
on November 17, 2023; and |
|
       WHEREAS, Each year, the Texas Tech Alumni Association honors |
|
graduates of Texas Tech University who have made a significant |
|
impact on the lives of others through their professional |
|
achievements and community involvement; and |
|
       WHEREAS, John Owens attended Texas Tech on a four-year |
|
baseball scholarship, and in his senior year, he was named an |
|
All-Southwest Conference player; he earned a bachelor's degree in |
|
physical education in 1971 and a master's degree in education in |
|
1973; for a year, he played professionally with the San Francisco |
|
Giants organization; he joined the Texas Tech Athletic Department |
|
in 1973 and rose to become associate athletic director for business |
|
development; in 1979, he embarked on a new career that would span 42 |
|
years in the banking industry; he cofounded PlainsCapital |
|
Corporation and PlainsCapital Bank and served as chair of |
|
PlainsCapital Bank West Texas Region; now retired, he is a member of |
|
the advisory boards for PlainsCapital Bank in Lubbock and Dallas; |
|
and |
|
       WHEREAS, Dedicated to his alma mater, Mr. Owens served as |
|
chair of both the Texas Tech Foundation and the Texas Tech Red |
|
Raider Club, and he was president of the Texas Tech University |
|
Lettermen's Association; moreover, he is a member of the Texas Tech |
|
Alumni Association and the Texas Tech Executive Round Table; |
|
benefiting the wider community, he is a charter member and former |
|
vice chair of the Lubbock Power and Light Electric Utility Board, |
|
and he currently serves on the board of Carillon Senior Living; he |
|
has also served on the Texas Baptist Foundation Board, and he is a |
|
supporter of numerous charitable organizations, including the |
|
American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, the American Heart |
|
Association, and the Lubbock Area United Way; and |
|
       WHEREAS, The accomplishments of noteworthy alumni are a |
|
source of great pride to all those associated with Texas Tech, and |
|
John Owens is indeed deserving of this prestigious honor; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
       RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas, |
|
4th Called Session, hereby congratulate John C. Owens on being |
|
named a Distinguished Alumni by the Texas Tech Alumni Association |
|
and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
|
further |
|
       RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Owens as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives and Senate. |
