A JOINT RESOLUTION
|
|
|
proposing a constitutional amendment clarifying that a voter must |
|
|
be a United States citizen. |
|
|
       BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
       SECTION 1.  Section 1(a), Article VI, Texas Constitution, is |
|
|
amended to read as follows: |
|
|
       (a)  The following classes of persons shall not be allowed to |
|
|
vote in this State: |
|
|
             (1)  persons under 18 years of age; |
|
|
             (2)  persons who have been determined mentally |
|
|
incompetent by a court, subject to such exceptions as the |
|
|
Legislature may make; [and] |
|
|
             (3)  persons convicted of any felony, subject to such |
|
|
exceptions as the Legislature may make; and |
|
|
             (4)  persons who are not citizens of the United States. |
|
|
       SECTION 2.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be |
|
|
submitted to the voters at an election to be held May 4, 2024. The |
|
|
ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the |
|
|
proposition: "The constitutional amendment clarifying that a voter |
|
|
must be a United States citizen." |
