H.R. No. 195

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The members of Katy's First Baptist Church are
celebrating the 125th anniversary of the church's founding on
November 19, 2023, and this significant milestone is indeed
deserving of special recognition; and
WHEREAS, The congregation was organized under the name Zion
Baptist Church in 1898, three years after the townsite of Katy was
laid out and platted; services were initially conducted in a local
schoolhouse, in members' homes, and in a local Methodist church,
before the congregation moved into its own building in April 1914;
the church grew steadily in the 1920s and 1930s, and during World
War II, the Humble Katy Gas Plant went into operation to support the
war effort, bringing an influx of new residents and new church
members to the community; and
WHEREAS, Over the decades, Katy's First Baptist Church has
added and expanded facilities to accommodate the needs of its
growing membership; along the way, a variety of ministries have
been created for men, women, and children to foster fellowship and
spiritual enrichment; congregants have further supported numerous
missionary efforts that have resulted in the construction of new
houses of worship, and today the church's outreach efforts include
overseas missionary trips and hunger relief programs; and
WHEREAS, The church has benefited from the guidance and
wisdom of a number of dedicated clergy leaders, and it is embarking
on a new chapter in its history as it welcomes its new senior
pastor, Dr. Rob Lyerly, in 2023; and
WHEREAS, Generations of Texans have looked to Katy's First
Baptist Church for hope, comfort, and inspiration, and it is a
pleasure to join in recognizing the abiding faith and commitment of
those who have sustained the church for more than a century; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 125th
anniversary of Katy's First Baptist Church and extend to its
congregants sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
