R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
       WHEREAS, Head football coach Tim Buchanan and athletic |
|
director and former coach Steve Wood retired from the Aledo |
|
Independent School District in 2023 after having guided the Aledo |
|
Bearcats to a total of 11 state titles, setting the University |
|
Interscholastic League record for the most football championships; |
|
and |
|
       WHEREAS, Tim Buchanan arrived at Aledo in 1993, and his |
|
successful efforts to build a winning culture for the football |
|
program transformed the Bearcats into a powerhouse; during the 25 |
|
years that he coached the team, Aledo won eight state |
|
championships, and the Bearcats added three more titles during the |
|
five-year period when he stepped away from coaching to serve as |
|
athletic director before returning to the sidelines in 2019; his |
|
final championship victory came on December 17, 2022, when Aledo |
|
defeated College Station High School in the 5A Division 1 state |
|
final; with the win, Coach Buchanan closed out his career with a |
|
281-58-3 ledger; and |
|
       WHEREAS, Coach Buchanan first joined the coaching ranks in |
|
1984 as an assistant at Bastrop High School, and he later held |
|
assistant positions at Killeen Ellison, The Colony, and A&M |
|
Consolidated High Schools, the latter of which claimed the 1991 4A |
|
state title during his tenure; one of the most respected figures in |
|
the game, he was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches |
|
Association Hall of Honor in July 2023; and |
|
       WHEREAS, Steve Wood joined the Aledo High faculty in 2002 as |
|
the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the football |
|
team, working under the direction of Coach Buchanan; over the next |
|
two decades, he played an instrumental role in the Bearcats' |
|
phenomenal success; after helping the team win four state crowns |
|
during his tenure as assistant head coach, he served as head coach |
|
from 2014 through 2018, guiding his players to three state |
|
championships in four title game appearances and racking up 75 wins |
|
against only 4 losses; in 2019, he concluded his coaching |
|
responsibilities to become the district's athletic director, and |
|
during the next four years, he provided essential support to the |
|
team as it made three more state championship runs; and |
|
       WHEREAS, Earlier in his career, Mr. Wood distinguished |
|
himself as a teacher and as a football, basketball, track, and |
|
powerlifting coach; beginning in 1981, he was employed at Calhoun |
|
High School in Port Lavaca, and he went on to work at J. Frank Dobie |
|
High School in Houston and at Boswell High School in Fort Worth; and |
|
       WHEREAS, Architects of a gridiron dynasty at Aledo High |
|
School, Tim Buchanan and Steve Wood set a new standard for coaching |
|
excellence in Texas high school football, and their achievements |
|
will resonate for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|
       RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Tim Buchanan |
|
and Steve Wood for leading the Aledo High School football team to a |
|
UIL record 11 state championships and extend to them sincere best |
|
wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
       RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Wood as an expression of high |
|
regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
