R E S O L U T I O N
|
 
|
             WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |
 
|
passing of Billy Howard Sherrill of Nacogdoches on July 16, 2023, at |
 
|
the age of 91; and |
 
|
             WHEREAS, Born on July 4, 1932, in Batesville, Arkansas, to |
 
|
Thomas Howard and Grace Martelia Aldridge Sherrill, Bill Sherrill |
 
|
grew up with the companionship of a sister, Margaret; he attended |
 
|
Harding Academy in Searcy, Arkansas, through high school, and he |
 
|
went on to earn a degree in physical education from Harding College; |
 
|
over the course of a varied career, he taught school, coached, ran a |
 
|
mail route, and served as a pilot for a number of physicians in the |
 
|
Fort Smith, Arkansas, area; he also received a master's degree in |
 
|
counseling from Stephen F. Austin State University on his way to |
 
|
becoming a licensed professional counselor; and |
 
|
             WHEREAS, Mr.  Sherrill's strong faith led him to pursue his |
 
|
calling as an ordained minister for the Church of Christ; he began |
 
|
preaching full time in Alma and Fort Smith, Arkansas, before |
 
|
serving as the pulpit minister for the North Street Church of Christ |
 
|
in Nacogdoches from 1965 to 1998 and subsequently as the church's |
 
|
family minister until the time of his passing; he was deeply |
 
|
committed to his congregation, and he set an inspiring example for |
 
|
others through his compassionate words and deeds; and |
 
|
             WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr.  Sherrill enjoyed the |
 
|
support of the love of his life, Mary "Scotty" Sherrill, with whom |
 
|
he shared an extraordinary 70 years of marriage; the couple were |
 
|
blessed with 4 children, Terri, Mark, Kathy, and Hattie, as well as |
 
|
13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; he relished such |
 
|
activities as flying, sailing, motorcycling, go-cart racing, and |
 
|
being out in nature, and he was known as an excellent storyteller |
 
|
through writing, song, and the spoken word; and |
 
|
             WHEREAS, Bill Sherrill was beloved for his warmth and |
 
|
kindness, his unwavering faith, and his spirit of adventure, and he |
 
|
will forever hold a treasured place in the hearts of those he leaves |
 
|
behind; now, therefore, be it |
 
|
             RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
 
|
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
 
|
Billy Howard Sherrill and extend sincere sympathy to his family and |
 
|
many friends; and, be it further |
 
|
             RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
 
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
 
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bill |
 
|
Sherrill. |
