R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
       WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |
|
passing of Dr. Alma S nchez P rez of San Angelo on September 11, |
|
2023, at the age of 78; and |
|
       WHEREAS, Born in Sonora on January 8, 1945, the former Alma |
|
S nchez was the eldest child of Alfredo and Marcelina S nchez; |
|
after graduating from Sonora High School in 1963, she earned a |
|
degree from Angelo State College in 1967; shortly thereafter, she |
|
married Louis P rez Jr. and moved to Lubbock to begin her career as |
|
a teacher; the couple relocated to San Angelo in 1974, and they |
|
shared in the joy of raising three children, Louie, Marisol, and |
|
Stephanie; in her later years, she delighted in welcoming into her |
|
family seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and |
|
       WHEREAS, A lifelong activist, Dr. P rez joined the American |
|
GI Forum as a student and went on to become an active member of |
|
LULAC; she taught naturalization and English classes to many in her |
|
community, and she encouraged Mexican Americans to participate in |
|
civic life and to exercise their right to vote; in addition, she |
|
served as the director for the religious education program at |
|
St. Joseph Catholic Church and volunteered her time on several |
|
civic advisory boards in the San Angelo community; she and her |
|
husband also had the distinction of being among the founding owners |
|
of La Unica Broadcasting, which was established in 1985; and |
|
       WHEREAS, Dr. P rez was a firm believer in education, which |
|
led her to pursue and complete a Ph.D. at The University of Texas at |
|
Austin in 2007, when she was 62 years old; her final teaching |
|
position was a graduate distance learning course at the University |
|
of Southern California, and she demonstrated her intellectual |
|
curiosity as an avid reader until the date of her passing; and |
|
       WHEREAS, Dr. Alma S nchez P rez inspired those around her |
|
with her unwavering commitment to her ideals and her determination |
|
to better the lives of others, and she leaves behind a legacy that |
|
will forever be cherished by those she leaves behind; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
       RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
of Dr. Alma S nchez P rez and extend sincere sympathy to the |
|
members of her family: to her children, Louie P rez and his wife, |
|
Amy, Marisol P rez and her husband, David Armend riz, and Stephanie |
|
Minjarez and her husband, Jesse Rene; to her grandchildren, Jordan |
|
Rene Minjarez and his wife, Yvonne, Joshua and Jonah Minjarez, |
|
Karina and Andrew P rez, and Xim na and X tchitl Armend riz; to her |
|
great-grandchildren, Anali Montserrat and Amiyah Minjarez; and to |
|
her other relatives and many dear friends; and, be it further |
|
       RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Alma |
|
S nchez P rez. |
