A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
 
|
AN ACT
|
 
|
relating to the inclusion of a mental health course in the required |
 
|
curriculum for public high school students. |
 
|
             BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
 
|
             SECTION  1.    Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by |
 
|
adding Subsection (c-4) to read as follows: |
 
|
             (c-4)    The State Board of Education shall adopt rules |
 
|
requiring students to complete at least one mental health course |
 
|
while in high school that satisfies the requirements of Subsection |
 
|
(a)(2)(B)(ii) and includes: |
 
|
                         (1)    instruction regarding: |
 
|
                                     (A)    depression; |
 
|
                                     (B)    anxiety; |
 
|
                                     (C)    eating disorders; |
 
|
                                     (D)    schizophrenia; and |
 
|
                                     (E)    other mental health disorders; and |
 
|
                         (2)    information about cultivating coping skills and |
 
|
seeking available mental health services. |
 
|
             SECTION  2.    This Act applies beginning with the 2024-2025 |
 
|
school year. |
 
|
             SECTION  3.    This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
 
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
 
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.    If this |
 
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
 
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
