Senate Joint Resolution 1172 honors R. Larry Smith of Knox County for his extensive contributions to the State of Tennessee and his community. Mr. Smith has had a distinguished career, beginning with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, followed by significant roles in the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. He is recognized for certifying over 500 graduates as a hunter safety instructor and for his leadership as commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation from 2001 to 2004. Additionally, he founded R. Larry Smith & Associates Insurance Agency and has received numerous accolades in the insurance field, including the National Quality Award and the Million Dollar Round Table Award.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Smith has been an active community leader, serving on various boards and organizations, including the American Cancer Society and the Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad. He has also been involved with the Boy Scouts of America for nearly sixty years, earning several honors for his service.
