House Joint Resolution 1220, sponsored by McKenzie, honors the memory of Juanita Usher Cannon, a dedicated educator and community leader from Knoxville who recently passed away. Ms. Cannon was a prominent figure in her community, known for her commitment to improving the lives of her fellow citizens through her work as a professional educator for nearly forty years. She graduated from Austin High School in 1958 and went on to earn degrees from Knoxville College and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Throughout her career, she held various roles, including teaching at Austin-East Magnet High School and serving as principal at Vine Middle Magnet School, where she was recognized for her compassion and dedication to her students.
In addition to her educational contributions, Ms. Cannon was a trailblazer in her community, being the first African-American president of the Knoxville Education Association and serving on the Tennessee Education Association board of directors. Her involvement extended to the Knoxville Community Development Corporation, where she played a significant role in local redevelopment projects. Recognized for her service, she received numerous awards, including the Dewey W. Roberts human relations award, and a street was named in her honor in 2013. The resolution reflects on her legacy of integrity, compassion, and dedication, acknowledging the profound impact she had on those around her and the community at large.
