Senate Bill 2379, known as the "Reckless Bullet Prevention Act," amends Tennessee law to establish a new offense for the reckless discharge of a firearm. Under the new section 39-17-1367, a person commits an offense if they recklessly discharge a firearm into the air, ground, water, or an object near others, with such a violation classified as a Class A misdemeanor. The bill outlines specific exceptions to this rule, including discharges by law enforcement officers, military personnel, and authorized wildlife officers, as well as situations involving self-defense or the defense of domestic animals.
Additionally, the bill amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 39-17-1351(e), to require that all department-approved handgun safety courses include instruction on the new reckless discharge law starting July 1, 2026. The act is set to take effect on the same date, applying to actions occurring on or after that time.
