House Bill 2023 amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 40-24-109, regarding the victims assistance assessment. The bill deletes subsection (c) and replaces it with a provision that mandates clerks of various courts to collect a victims assistance assessment from individuals who either plead guilty, are found guilty, or enter a plea of nolo contendere, among other specified circumstances. The assessment amount is set at a maximum of one hundred twenty-five dollars ($125), which is determined by the court.

Additionally, the bill modifies subsection (g)(1) by removing the previous language and stipulating that the victims assistance assessment is subject to existing tax laws and is in addition to other costs and fines. It specifies that the first fifteen dollars ($15) of each assessment will go to the court clerk for processing, while the remaining amount will be allocated to the county's victims assistance program. The act is set to take effect upon becoming law.
