House Bill 2612, also known as Senate Bill 1783, amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 55-50-321, to establish new procedures for applicants seeking a driver license. The bill mandates that at the time of application or renewal, staff at driver license stations must inquire whether the applicant wants a REAL ID compliant driver license or a non-REAL ID compliant license. Applicants will receive a printed document to sign, indicating their choice, and this document will outline the necessary requirements and purposes for each type of license, as well as alternative forms of identification accepted in lieu of a REAL ID.
Additionally, the bill specifies that if an applicant chooses not to apply for a REAL ID compliant license, staff must assist in processing the application for a non-REAL ID compliant license. Notably, the new provisions do not apply to those renewing an existing REAL ID compliant license. The department's website will also feature a clear statement indicating that obtaining a REAL ID compliant driver license is optional. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
