Senate Joint Resolution 579, sponsored by Akbari, honors the memory of Marzie Thomas, a respected community leader and former publisher of The Tri-State Defender in Memphis, who recently passed away. Marzie Thomas had a significant impact on the newspaper industry, serving in various roles for over sixteen years and becoming one of the few Black women to hold the position of publisher. Her leadership was instrumental in navigating the challenges faced by the historic Black newspaper, and she later contributed to public service as a special assistant for veterans' affairs and community outreach in the office of U.S. Representative Steve Cohen, eventually rising to the position of district director.
The resolution reflects on Marzie Thomas's dedication to her community, her family values, and her lifelong commitment to service. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and LeMoyne-Owen College, she was also an active member of East Trigg Avenue Baptist Church. Marzie is remembered for her integrity, compassion, and diligence, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by her family, including her two daughters and granddaughter. The resolution expresses condolences to her family and acknowledges her remarkable contributions to both public life and her community.
