House Joint Resolution 729, sponsored by Lamberth, proposes an amendment to Article VII, Section 5 of the Tennessee Constitution to align the election dates for judicial and other civil officers with those of the General Assembly and the Governor. Currently, elections for these officials are held on the first Thursday in August, while elections for the General Assembly and the Governor occur on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The resolution argues that synchronizing all federal, state, and local elections on the same day would reduce costs for the state and local governments and enhance voter participation in local elections.
The proposed amendment would change the election date for judicial officers and other elected county officials (excluding the assessor of property) to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, starting in 2034. The term for these officials would be calculated from December 1 following their election. Conversely, property assessors would continue to be elected on the first Thursday in August, beginning in 2032, with their terms computed from September 1 after their election. The resolution also mandates that this proposed amendment be referred to the next General Assembly and published by the Secretary of State.
