Senate Bill 1484 amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 40, Chapter 11, Part 1, by introducing a new section that allows certain individuals to deposit cash equal to the bail amount with the court clerk. Specifically, this includes professional bondsmen, individuals with bailable interest (defined as the defendant or their spouse, parent, child, sibling, legal guardian, or employer), and any other person.
Additionally, the bill establishes that if a person who is not a professional bondsman or a person with bailable interest deposits bail for a defendant, and that defendant is later convicted of a crime committed while released on bail, victims of that crime may pursue a civil lawsuit against the bail depositor for damages related to property, injury, or death resulting from the offense. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2026, and will apply to causes of action arising on or after that date.
