House Joint Resolution 592, sponsored by Representative Harris, recognizes and commends the University of Memphis Athletic Department for its outstanding achievements in collegiate athletics. The resolution highlights the department's success as a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I institution and a charter member of the American Athletic Conference (AAC), noting that since joining the AAC in 2013, the University has won thirteen conference titles across its nineteen intercollegiate sports teams. It specifically celebrates the accomplishments of the Memphis Tigers football team, which achieved its fifth consecutive bowl game victory and back-to-back ten-win seasons for the first time in program history, as well as the men's basketball team, which secured the AAC regular season and tournament championships under Coach Penny Hardaway.
Additionally, the resolution acknowledges the academic success of the student-athletes, with a graduation rate of 94 percent among football players and thirteen out of seventeen athletic teams achieving a perfect single-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score. The resolution concludes by expressing the General Assembly's appreciation for the dedication and talent of the students, coaches, and staff of the University of Memphis Athletic Department, wishing them continued success in the future.
