House Joint Resolution 592 recognizes and commends the University of Memphis Athletic Department for its outstanding achievements in collegiate athletics. As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and the American Athletic Conference, the University of Memphis has demonstrated remarkable success, winning thirteen AAC titles since joining the conference in 2013. Notably, the Memphis Tigers football team achieved its fifth consecutive bowl game victory and recorded back-to-back ten-win seasons for the first time in program history, finishing the 2024 season ranked in the top 25 of both the Coaches and AP Polls. Additionally, the men's basketball team, under Coach Penny Hardaway, secured the AAC regular season and tournament championships, while the women's basketball team celebrated its 425th win at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The resolution also highlights the academic success of the student-athletes, with a graduation rate of 94 percent among football players and several teams achieving perfect Academic Progress Rate scores. The perseverance and talent of the University of Memphis Athletic Department are acknowledged as key factors in their championship seasons and future potential.
