Senate Joint Resolution 165, sponsored by Oliver, honors the Jefferson Street Historical Society (JSHS) for its significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of Nashville's historic Jefferson Street. Founded in 2023 by Monchiere' Holmes-Jones and a group of local business leaders, JSHS is dedicated to revitalizing the area known as Nashville's Black Wall Street, which has a rich history of nearly 160 years and is home to over eighty-six Black-owned businesses. The organization aims to amplify the cultural and economic significance of Jefferson Street through various initiatives, including beautification projects, history tours, and music and art festivals.
The resolution acknowledges JSHS's efforts in curating a master plan to honor the street's musical roots and cultural heritage, ensuring its legacy for future generations. Recently, the organization received a leadership award from Nashville's Metro Historic Zoning Commission for its work in celebrating Jefferson Street's musical heritage. The resolution commends JSHS for its outstanding service and contributions to the community, wishing them continued success in their endeavors.
