House Bill 897 amends Tennessee Code Annotated regarding the fluoridation of drinking water. The bill mandates that if a public water system's quarterly analysis reveals fluoride levels exceeding 0.4 mg/L, the system must conduct monthly analyses and notify customers of the elevated fluoride levels. Once fluoride levels are confirmed to be below 0.4 mg/L for three consecutive months, the system may revert to quarterly testing. Additionally, the bill clarifies that naturally occurring fluoride is permissible as long as it does not exceed federal limits.

Furthermore, the bill stipulates that any public water system currently adding fluoride must cease this practice by July 31, 2025, and provide written notice to customers at least 30 days prior to discontinuation. A new provision is also added to the law, explicitly addressing the addition of fluoride or fluoride compounds to the public drinking water supply. The act is set to take effect on May 1, 2025.
