House Bill 933 amends Tennessee Code Annotated to establish a new section focused on enhancing school safety through the implementation of artificial intelligence weapons detection systems. The bill defines "eligible LEA" as local education agencies with ten or more schools that have been identified as priority schools in various years and have experienced a loss of student life due to gun violence during the 2024-2025 school year. The Department of Education is tasked with creating a three-year pilot program to provide grants to these eligible LEAs for the purchase of such detection systems, which must be capable of identifying weapons and notifying law enforcement and school administration immediately.
The bill outlines the grant allocation process, stating that the Department of Education will determine the amount of each grant and ensure that 100% of the appropriated funds are disbursed annually. If all schools within an eligible LEA acquire the detection systems, remaining funds can be used for other approved school security measures. The pilot program is set to begin in the 2025-2026 school year, with annual reporting requirements to the General Assembly regarding the implementation and effectiveness of the program. The section will be repealed on July 31, 2028.
