House Bill 515 aims to enhance the dissemination of information regarding Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes within local education agencies (LEAs) and public charter schools in Tennessee. Starting August 1, 2025, if these educational institutions provide information on immunizations, infectious diseases, medications, or other health issues to parents and guardians of K-12 students, they will also be required to include diabetes information published by the Department of Education. This information will cover descriptions of both types of diabetes, associated risk factors and warning signs, recommendations for consulting primary care providers for screening, and guidance on developing treatment plans post-diagnosis.
Additionally, the Department of Education, in collaboration with the Department of Health, is tasked with developing and publishing a comprehensive resource on diabetes by July 31, 2025. This publication will be made available for free download to LEAs and public charter schools and will include essential information such as the screening processes for diabetes and the significance of its stages. The bill emphasizes the importance of early detection and appropriate management of diabetes among students, thereby promoting better health outcomes within the school community.
