Senate Bill 344, also known as House Bill 506, amends the Tennessee Code Annotated to enhance safety training requirements for local education agencies (LEAs) and public charter schools. The bill mandates that each school must have at least one full-time employee trained annually in seizure safety and first aid to assist in emergencies. Additionally, it stipulates that training for personnel who volunteer to administer anti-seizure medications will fulfill the seizure safety and first aid training requirement, provided it includes the necessary components.
The bill also includes provisions that protect LEAs and public charter school employees from liability for personal injuries resulting from their actions or omissions while performing duties related to seizure safety and first aid, as long as those actions do not constitute willful or wanton misconduct or gross negligence. Notably, the definition of "employee" for the purposes of this section explicitly excludes school nurses employed or contracted by the LEA or public charter school. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
