House Bill 380 amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49, to establish new requirements for virtual schools regarding their curriculum and instructional materials. A new subsection (e) is added, mandating that all virtual schools must utilize a curriculum that meets or exceeds the academic standards set by the state board of education, and this requirement cannot be waived. Additionally, the state textbook and instructional materials quality commission is tasked with creating a procedure to receive and evaluate feedback from residents concerning whether the virtual school curriculum meets these standards.
If feedback is received indicating that a virtual school's curriculum does not meet the required standards, the commission must evaluate this feedback within 60 days and provide a written determination to each local education agency (LEA) operating a virtual school. Should the commission find that the curriculum or instructional materials are inadequate, the virtual school must cease using them and replace them with compliant materials. This act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
