House Bill 90, sponsored by Haston, amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-1-228(a), to update the criteria for measuring student achievement and school performance. The bill removes the previous subdivision (3) and introduces new language that emphasizes the use of reliable outcome indicators. Specifically, if the Department of Education utilizes student performance on postsecondary readiness assessments like the ACT or SAT, it must also incorporate results from career readiness assessments. Furthermore, when a student takes both types of assessments, only the higher score will be considered for determining the school's letter grade.

The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, and will apply to school grades issued for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond. This legislative change aims to enhance accountability in education by ensuring that multiple indicators of student achievement are taken into account when evaluating school performance.
