HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 1432

A RESOLUTION to honor the memory of James Nelson Point of
Rogersville.
WHEREAS, it was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of James Nelson Point, who will be fondly remembered as "a great giver of sound, reasonable advice and counsel"; and WHEREAS, a gentleman of diverse talents, Mr. Point attended the University of
Pittsburgh, Wooster College, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill on his educational path, before obtaining a master's degree in city planning and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee, where he met the love of his life and future wife, Nancy Wilson; and WHEREAS, Mr. Point proudly served the United States of America as a U.S. Naval Intelligence Officer at the rank of lieutenant and was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and WHEREAS, he moved to Rogersville in 1974 to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority and then opened his own law practice in Hawkins County in 1982; and WHEREAS, Mr. Point was the attorney for Holston Electric Cooperative for twenty-five years and served on numerous other boards, including the Rogersville Water Commission, Chip Hale Center, and McKinney Cemetery; and WHEREAS, he was the Hawkins County delinquent tax attorney for forty-two years,
ensuring fiscal responsibility and tirelessly working to safeguard the interests of the county's residents; and WHEREAS, in his professional endeavors, Mr. Point was renowned for his dignity,
fairness, integrity, honor, and deep sense of personal responsibility, along with his affable personality; and HJR1432

WHEREAS, on the domestic front, Mr. and Mrs. Point exemplified the values of family by
raising their three daughters, Riki, Beth, and Alicia, in Rogersville and creating a welcoming home environment for their friends; and WHEREAS, the Point family were active members of the Rogersville Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Point served numerous years as a youth leader and lay pastor; and WHEREAS, deeply committed to serving his community, Jim Point was a volunteer coach for girls' basketball and softball with Rogersville Parks and Recreation for thirty years and was inducted into its Little League Coach Hall of Fame in 1994; and WHEREAS, he served fifty years as a member of the United Way Board of Directors and was a Rotary Club member for more than twenty years; and WHEREAS, Mr. Point had an incredible sense of humor, and he kept his family and his second family (his co-workers) entertained with his seemingly inexhaustible supply of dad jokes,
his portrayal of Uncle Sam during Fourth of July parades and festivities, and the outrageous holiday suits he donned for the Christmas Cantata at the Hawkins County Court House; and WHEREAS, in addition to his fondness for corny jokes, he loved to tell fictional tales about his football career at the Detroit School of Cooking and his experiences as an Olympic athlete in tiptoe pole vaulting; and WHEREAS, an avid reader of literature and poetry, Mr. Point was also a world traveler;
as he and Mrs. Point traveled the globe, they loved meeting new people and experiencing new cultures and especially enjoyed their frequent trips to Alaska; and WHEREAS, he was a Zorkba Scholar and the creator of the Violet Rose saga, all beloved by his grandchildren; and WHEREAS, James Nelson Point is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Nancy Wilson Point; daughters, Alicia (Jason) Mumpower, Beth (Michael) Clingaman, and Riki (Steve)
Zimmerman; grandchildren, Max Mumpower, Charlie Clingaman, Maddie Clingaman, Alexandra

Zimmerman, and J.D. (Jillian) Zimmerman; sister, Maggi Ruth Boyer; sister-in-law, Melba E.
Wilson; and his many special friends at the office of Point & Keetan and the Hawkins County Court House; and WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his parents, Lenard H. Point and Patricia S.
Point; and WHEREAS, Jim Point was a stalwart in his profession and his community and the beloved patriarch of a family who always came first for him; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
THIRTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
CONCURRING, that we honor the memory of James Nelson Point, reflecting fondly upon his many contributions to the law, this State, and Hawkins County and his life of purpose and commitment to others.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we express our sympathy and extend our condolences to Mr. Point's family and many friends.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear without House or Senate designation.
