Senate Bill 1795 amends Tennessee Code Annotated regarding the age of eligibility for school attendance. The bill changes the cutoff date for children entering school from "August 15" to "May 15" in both Section 49-6-201(b)(3) and Section 49-6-3001. Additionally, it removes subdivision (b)(2)(B) from Section 49-6-3001, which may have previously outlined specific eligibility criteria.
Furthermore, the bill allows children who are part of certain pre-kindergarten programs to enter kindergarten in the 2025-2026 school year, provided they turn five years old on or before August 15, 2024. This provision applies to children in LEA-administered pre-kindergarten programs, private school pre-kindergarten programs, and Head Start programs. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2024, and will apply to the 2024-2025 school year and subsequent years.
