SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 7144
By Crowe
A RESOLUTION to commend the Schubert Club of Jonesborough on the occasion of its 125th anniversary.
WHEREAS, it is fitting that we pay tribute to those exemplary organizations that work with purpose and conviction to improve the quality of life in their respective communities; and WHEREAS, one such esteemed organization is the Schubert Club, a women's service club in Jonesborough that is celebrating its 125th anniversary this fall; and WHEREAS, the Schubert Club was organized by a group of like-minded women, most of
them members of the Jonesborough Social Club, on October 4, 1898; it takes its name from composer Franz Schubert, as the members of the club devoted themselves to supporting the arts, especially music and literature; and WHEREAS, one year after its founding, the Schubert Club joined the Tennessee Federation of Women's Clubs, and in 1923, it became a member of the national General Federation of Women's Clubs; and WHEREAS, one of the first actions of the club was to join with the Women's Christian Temperance Union and support the Town of Jonesborough's library; the ladies of the Schubert Club collected books and helped fundraise for the library and, on more than one occasion, aided in the library's relocation; and WHEREAS, other causes supported by the club throughout the years include the passage of a compulsory education law (1909); a petition regarding unjust laws concerning women (1913); accurate weight and measurements (1915); and the National Child Labor Law
(1925); and WHEREAS, their supported causes have further included renewed appropriations for maternal and infant care (1927); reduction of the tariff on rayon (1930); the World Court (1930);

recorded music (1942); and a repeal of the cabaret tax on artists (1956); and WHEREAS, although the club has never consisted of more than thirty-five members,
these members have achieved a great deal; the club met twice a month from its inception until
1962, when members began meeting monthly; and WHEREAS, the Schubert Club now meets nine times a year and partners with the Garden Club to host the annual Garden Gala—a fundraiser for all of the charities and civic organizations the club supports, including the Jonesborough Public Library, the JAMA Food Pantry, the Heritage Alliance, the Storytelling Resource Place, the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre, and many more; and WHEREAS, it is fitting that we recognize one of Tennessee's oldest women's service clubs on this special occasion; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRTEENTH
