HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 7029

A RESOLUTION to honor the memory of June Smith of Macon County.
WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly were greatly saddened to learn of
the passing of June Smith of Macon County; and WHEREAS, a beloved retired educator, June Smith was an exemplary public servant and consummate professional who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for her fellow citizens in numerous capacities; and WHEREAS, June Smith served with acumen and alacrity as an educator for thirty-three years, teaching both primary and secondary students, spending twenty-four of those years at
Red Boiling Springs School; and WHEREAS, in 1985, she was named the Supervisor of Special Education for Macon County and took her well-deserved retirement as an educator in 1994; and WHEREAS, she was a member of the Red Boiling Springs Teacher Hall of Fame, and during her teaching career, she also served as a sponsor of the Beta Club and was involved with the Special Olympics; and WHEREAS, she was one of forty-eight teachers nationwide to receive the MIND award from the National Association of Vocational Education and Special Needs Personnel for outstanding support for special needs students enrolled in vocational programs; and WHEREAS, following her retirement, she was asked to start the new Families First program in Macon County, where she taught academic subjects needed for participants to earn their general equivalency diplomas; and WHEREAS, an active part of her community, Mrs. Smith worked as a volunteer at
Macon Community Hospital and at The Place Nursing Home in Red Boiling Springs; and HJR7029

WHEREAS, she was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at Tennessee Technological University, the Macon County Retired Teachers Association, the Tennessee Retired Teachers Association, and the National Education Association; and WHEREAS, June Smith was an esteemed member of her community and was recognized by North Central Telephone Company as the recipient of the Will Hall Sullivan Award; and WHEREAS, she was an active and devout member of Smith Chapel Methodist Church,
which she served faithfully for many years in numerous capacities; and WHEREAS, she was also deeply devoted to her family, and she always endeavored to
remain true to family values of the highest order; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith enjoyed the loving companionship of her husband, Dewey, for fifty-two years before his passing in 2001 and was the proud mother of two children, Dewey Kent and Lisa Jan Smith, both of whom followed in her footsteps with careers in education; and WHEREAS, June Smith leaves behind an indelible legacy of integrity and probity in
public life, compassion and loyalty in private life, and diligence and dedication in all her chosen endeavors; and WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should pause to
remember the bountiful life of this exceptional public servant and human being; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
THIRTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
CONCURRING, that we honor the memory of June Smith, reflecting fondly upon her impeccable character and her stalwart commitment to living the examined life with courage and conviction.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we express our sympathy and offer our condolences to the family of Mrs. Smith.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
