HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 7026

A RESOLUTION to honor the memory of George Bew McGugin of
Nashville.
WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly were greatly saddened to learn of
the passing of George Bew McGugin of Nashville; and WHEREAS, George McGugin was an exemplary public servant and consummate professional who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for his fellow citizens in
numerous capacities; and WHEREAS, a native Tennessean born in Nashville on May 1, 1940, George Bew McGugin was the son of Dan. E. McGugin, Jr., and Catherine Bew McGugin, and attended Parmer School and graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA); and WHEREAS, he attended Vanderbilt University, where he played football for the Commodores and was named to the All-SEC Sophomore First Team; he received his bachelor's degree in 1962 and obtained his law degree from Vanderbilt Law School in 1965; and WHEREAS, before embarking on a legal career, Mr. McGugin proudly served his country in the National Guard, training in Germany, and eventually joined his father at the law firm started by his grandfather, Dan McGugin, who was a coaching legend at Vanderbilt University; and WHEREAS, an esteemed member of the legal profession, George McGugin was elected by his peers to serve as president of the International Association of Defense Counsel, an organization composed of the world's leading corporate and insurance lawyers; and WHEREAS, a noted orator, writer, mediator, litigator, and advocate, Mr. McGugin was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and focused on mediation in the later years of

WHEREAS, following in the coaching footsteps of his grandfather, Mr. McGugin assisted the football team at MBA during the 1960s and returned in the 1990s to focus on mentoring,
motivating, and inspiring the young student athletes at his alma mater; and WHEREAS, he was also deeply devoted to his Faith and his family, and he always endeavored to remain true to values of the highest order; and WHEREAS, he enjoyed the loving companionship of his wife, Anne Applegarth McGugin, and was the proud father of Daniel George McGugin, William Applegarth McGugin,
and Susan Anne McGugin Davis; and doting grandfather of Dan, Thomas, Matthew, William,
Nancy, Frances, Preston, Jack, George, and Christopher; and WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dan E. McGugin III; and WHEREAS, a master storyteller, George McGugin was also a passionate coach, avid golfer, and loyal friend, who will be sadly mourned but fondly remembered by a host of extended family members, dear friends, and former players; and WHEREAS, George McGugin leaves behind an indelible legacy of integrity and probity in public life, compassion and loyalty in private life, and diligence and dedication in all his chosen endeavors; and WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should pause to
remember the bountiful life of this exceptional public servant and human being; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
THIRTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
CONCURRING, that we honor the memory of George Bew McGugin, reflecting fondly upon his impeccable character and his stalwart commitment to living the examined life with courage and conviction.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we express our sympathy and offer our condolences to the family of Mr. McGugin.
