This bill requires the board of nursing to establish the designation of a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (APRN-PMHNP-BC) for a nurse practitioner who holds national specialty certification as a PMHNP-BC from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
PERMITTED ACTIVITIES
Present law provides that a nurse who has been issued a certificate of fitness as a nurse practitioner must file a notice with the board, containing the name of the nurse practitioner, the name of the licensed physician collaborating with the nurse practitioner who has control and responsibility for prescriptive services rendered by the nurse practitioner, and a copy of the formulary describing the categories of legend drugs to be prescribed and/or issued by the nurse practitioner. Additionally, the nurse practitioner is responsible for updating this information.
This bill provides that, notwithstanding the provisions of present law described above, a nurse practitioner who has been issued a certificate of fitness, and who has been granted the APRN-PMHNP-BC designation, may, in the course of providing psychiatric mental health services, diagnose, create a plan of care, issue orders, and prescribe drugs and other treatments without a collaborating physician.
This bill takes effect upon becoming a law for purposes of promulgating rules and implementing necessary technological system changes, and January 1, 2024, for all other purposes.
