Senate Bill 646 amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 2-1-116(c), to establish new regulations regarding the removal of campaign signs from highway rights-of-way and other publicly owned properties. The bill mandates that county election commissions issue a notice to candidates or campaign committees whose signs remain in these areas for more than three weeks post-election, unless they fall under a specified exception. Upon receiving this notice, the candidates or committees are required to remove the signs within ten calendar days.
If the signs are not removed within the designated ten-day period, the county election commission is authorized to impose a civil penalty of up to fifty dollars per day for each parcel of property where the signs remain. This legislation aims to ensure that campaign signs are promptly removed after elections, thereby maintaining the aesthetics of public spaces. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2023.
